RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Honorable Burton ("Burt"] F. Natarus has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 86; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Burt is survived by his son, Michael, daughter Jill, and grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Chicago's near North Side since 1960, Burt was born and raised in Wausau, Wisconsin; and
WHEREAS, He was a graduate ofthe University of Wisconsin and University of Wisconsin Law School, a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, he later taught at Chicago's Loyola University on the subject of local government; and
WHEREAS, He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves, earning paratrooper's jump wings; and
WHEREAS, Burt was a respected alderman, attorney and one of the longest-serving Democratic Alderman in Chicago history, serving from 1971 - 2007; and
WHEREAS, Having won 9 elections for public office, Burt was widely recognized as a colorful alderman, who thought of himself as the "Janitor of the Ward" where he worked tirelessly to ensure every resident of the 42nd Ward was represented; and
WHEREAS, He was also known in City Council as an expert in parliamentary procedures, and as the master of the ordinance for crafting much ofthe legislation that was passed in council during his aldermanic tenure; and
WHEREAS, Burt was also the first politician in the country to sponsor a plan to make driving while talking on a cellphone illegal; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Honorable Burton F. Natarus imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members ofthe Chicago City Council, assembled this Seventeenth day of June, 2020, do hereby commemorate Honorable Burton F. Natarus for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
