RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas was officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, 2014, in Cooperstown, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Nicknamed "The Big Hurt" for his thunderous ability to clinch games, Frank Thomas finished his career with 521 home runs and 1,704 RBIs; and
WHEREAS, Frank Thomas enjoyed a standout career as a superstar of Major League Baseball; and
WHEREAS, Frank Thomas was selected by the Chicago White Sox as the seventh pick in the first round of the 1989 Major League Baseball draft; and
WHEREAS, A first baseman and designated hitter, Frank Thomas played for the Chicago White Sox from 1990 to 2005, the Oakland Athletics in 2006 and 2008 and the Toronto Blue Jays from 2007 to 2008; and
WHEREAS, During his 16 years with the Chicago White Sox, Frank Thomas distinguished himself as the best hitter in the history of the franchise; and
WHEREAS, Frank Thomas is a five-time All-Star, four-time recipient of the Silver Slugger Award and two-time Most Valuable Player in the American League; and
WHEREAS, Only five players in all of baseball history — Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Babe Ruth, Manny Ramirez and Willie Mayes — have hit more home runs while earning a higher batting average than Frank Thomas; and
WHEREAS, Frank Thomas ended his 19-year career when he officially retired from the game on February 12, 2010, and now serves as a baseball commentator; and
WHEREAS, Frank Thomas is a true legend of the game in which all Chicagoans can take justifiable pride; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, do hereby congratulate Frank Thomas on his induction as a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and do hereby declare that August 18, 2014, shall be officially recognized as Frank Thomas Day throughout the City of Chica...
