Ms. GEORGIA GRIFFIN DAY
WHEREAS, Georgia Griffin was born in Natchez, Mississippi and was the seventh of fourteen children. She and her husband shared 39 years of Wedded Bliss. They have four children and five grandchildren that share their happiness at family gatherings. In 1992, she received her diploma in fitness and nutrition. By 1998, she was a certified aerobics instructor and senior fitness specialist; and
WHEREAS, Georgia Griffin is a fitness specialist, a line-dance instructor, a choreographer, an innovator and an entrepreneur. She has accomplished many things throughout her life, but her most satisfactory achievement was teaching aerobics and line dancing to senior citizens. She is a dedicated person who has enhanced the lives of seniors through these special fitness programs and nutritional instructional; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, Georgia Griffin received the rights for the acronym "S.O.M" for "Seniors on the Move". In May of 2008, she converted a car wash, which had been closed for eleven years, into a fitness and dance studio. Extolling her motto, "Don't sit, get fit, do it now", she teaches classes to seniors six days a week. In 2009, she received two community partnership awards from the Top Ladies of Distinction and The Community Renewal Society; and ,
WHEREAS, Georgia Griffin has choreographed over 30 dances as well as dances for the late Tyrone Davis and one for Vicki Winans. She taught and performed during the WNBA halftime show and at Windy City Mania 2010. Ms. Georgia has had her S.O.M. group in the Bud Billiken parade three times; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Michelle Harris, Alderman of the 8th Ward, has apprised this august body of this praiseworthy award in service of such a necessary and noble cause; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled on this 9th Day of February 2011 A.D., do hereby declare February 12th as "Ms. Georgia Griffin Day...
