MEMORIAL RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF ELIZABETH GASTON
WHEREAS, Elizabeth Gaston, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, passed away on January 6, 2022 at 77 years of age; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of Elizabeth's passing by the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth was born on February 27, 1944 in Glen Allen, Mississippi, to Amanda Clark-Cannon and Sammie Pearson; she was the eldest of eight siblings and grew up in the South of Mississippi where she learned how to keep house and take care of her younger siblings; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth received her education in Washington County, Mississippi and relocated to Chicago, Illinois in the mid-1960s; she confessed her hope in Christ and was baptized at an early age where she sang in church choirs; in 1972 she joined the Lighthouse Gospel MB Church, under the Pastoralship of the late Rev. Dr. Bernice Johnson, and was known for her rich voice and soulful sounds, all under the direction ofthe late Rev. Barbara Scott and Rev. Donald W. Harris; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Elizabeth earned many names of love from the people in her life including: Liz, Dude, Nanny, Ms. Gaston, MomaLiz, and Moma Gaston; and

WHEREAS, Moma Liz enjoyed cooking and was known for her signature chicken, dressing, collard greens, black eyed peas, speckled butter beans and okra, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, homemade biscuits, salmon croquettes, sweet potatoes, and lemon pies; she was generous and would open her door to anyone but she loved sharing her home and food with her family; and
WHEREAS, Moma Gaston loved her church and served faithfully on the Mother's Board Ministry of the True Love Christian Church, of Chicago where her baby boy, Rev. Michael A. Gaston, Sr., is Pastor and Teacher; she prepared meals, attended every church outing, taught everyone how to make the Church's coffee on Sunday morning, and gave motherly advice; and
