RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Lou Phillips, a widely admired member of the labor community, has retired as Business Manager of Laborers' Local 1001; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A proud 1973 graduate of De La Salle Institute, Lou Phillips attended the George Meany Center for Labor Studies; and
WHEREAS, A long-time employee of the City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation, Lou Phillips became the Business Manager of Laborers Local 1001 in 2005; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, Lou Phillips was responsible for negotiating labor agreements under Mayor Richard M. Daley and Mayor Rahm Emanuel; and
WHEREAS, Local 1001 represents 1,800 City of Chicago workers employed by the Department of Streets & Sanitation and the Chicago Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, The union's ranks include sanitation workers, pothole fillers and laborers who foster the safety of Chicago by ensuring that maintenance is performed on our public thoroughfares in a timely fashion; and
WHEREAS, The hard work and dedication of Lou Phillips serve as an outstanding example to us all; and
WHEREAS, We honor Lou Phillips for his many years of service as he begins a new chapter in his life; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of July, 2013, do hereby commend Lou Phillips for his leadership, dedication and years of hard work that have made our great metropolis a better place to live, work and raise families; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lou Phillips.
