RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, George Day, a retired Air Force Colonel and Medal of Honor recipient, has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, George Day was the loving and devoted husband of Doris; and
WHEREAS, George Day was the beloved father of Steve, George, Jr., Sonja and Sandra to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, One of the most highly decorated servicemen of the twentieth century, George Day earned more than seventy medals for his courageous tours of duty in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS George Day was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valiant struggle to elude capture after his aircraft was shot down over North Vietnam and he was forced to parachute into hostile territory; and
WHEREAS, George Day received the Air Force Cross for his heroic resistance to prolonged torture and interrogation at the hands of his North Vietnamese captors; and
WHEREAS, In spite of his grueling experience, George Day continued to inspire and motivate his fellow captives who included, at one point, the Honorable John McCain; and
WHEREAS, A man of great integrity and compassion, George Day was a tireless advocate on behalf of United States veterans; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of George Day serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared George Day to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, George Day imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
