SALUTE TO THE 2014 TEAMSTERS WOMENS CONFERENCE
 
WHEREAS, The 2014 Teamsters Women's Conference is scheduled to take place in our great city of Chicago, from Thursday September 4 to September 6, 2014 at the Chicago Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Avenue; and
 
WHEREAS, Chicago is home to many industries that understand the importance of organized labor. More than a century ago, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions -predecessor of the American Federation of Labor made Chicago the national center for promoting the eight-hour work day through hundreds of organized efforts, including events held at the historic Haymarket, establishing May Day; and
 
WHEREAS, In addition to Chicago's role in the labor movement, it played a pivotal role in the Women's Rights and Civil Rights Movement. Chicago takes deep-rooted pride in being the first major U.S. city to elect a female mayor. In 1979, former Mayor Jane Byrne was elected; and
 
WHEREAS, In the spirit of sisterhood, the 2014 Teamsters Women's Conference brings together Teamsters from throughout North America. The three-day event features an impressive program of speakers, union-building activities and educational workshops; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Carrie M. Austin, Alderman of the 34th Ward and Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Government Operations has informed this august body of this auspicious occasion; now, therefore,
 
Be It Resolved, That we, the mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council gathered together this thirtieth day of July 2014 A.D., do hereby declare September 4 to September 6, 2014 to be Teamsters Women's Days throughout Chicago and salute the great work and noble cause this organization has undertaken.
 
Be It Further Resolved, That suitable copies of this resolution be prepared and presented to the 2014 Teamsters Women's Conference members.
