Whereas , On October 28, 2012, Engine 93 of the Chicago Fire Department responded to a call for help regarding a fire at 418 West 99th Place; and

WHEREAS, Arriving on the scene, Engine 93 personnel saw heavy smoke billowing from a second-floor window in the front of a two-story brick home. Under the direction of Lieutenant John Majka, company members immediately led out a hose line for an aggressive interior attack; and

WHEREAS, As Lieutenant Majka was preparing to enter the burning house, frantic family members told him that a 94-year-old woman was trapped on the second floor; and

WHEREAS, Keenly aware that every second counted in this situation, Lieutenant Majka ran inside and rushed up the stairs without the protection of a hose line, and began searching for the victim; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Majka arrived at the bedroom, which was engulfed in flames. Fighting off the devastating heat and choking smoke, he pressed forward. Despite the limited visibility, he found the elderly woman on the bed. The woman, weighing approximately 250 pounds, had succumbed to the smoke and was unconscious; and

WHEREAS, Utilizing his 26 years of finely honed firefighting skills, combined with unrelenting strength, Lieutenant Majka was able to pull the unconscious victim from the poisonous atmosphere of the bedroom and into the hallway, and

WHEREAS, In the hall, he was met by his comrades, who were bringing the hose line up the stairs. Firefighter/Paramedic Anthony Licato came forward to assist, and together, they carried the woman downstairs to safety; and

WHEREAS, They quickly brought the victim, who in addition to smoke inhalation was suffering from burns to her arm and face, to Fire Department paramedics for treatment. The woman was then transported to Christ Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery; and
