RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The John Marshall Law School will celebrate the One-Hundredth Anniversary of its first Hispanic graduate at a reception to be held on November 27, 2012; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The John Marshall Law School will pay homage to the legacy of the Honorable William E. Rodriguez, a 1912 graduate of the institution; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable William E. Rodriguez practiced law in Chicago and was a founding member of the Chicago Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1915, the Honorable William E. Rodriguez became the first Hispanic elected to serve in the Chicago City Council in a replacement election and was then re-elected to office in 1916; and
 
WHEREAS, During his tenure as a member of the Chicago City Council, the Honorable William E. Rodriguez represented the 15th Ward, then located on the City's Northwest Side, and
 
WHEREAS, After leaving public service, the Honorable William E. Rodriguez practiced law well into his late eighties; and
 
WHEREAS, A permanent display on the second floor of City Hall entitled, "Chicago: Its City Halls and Councils," pays tribute to the Honorable William E. Rodriguez as the first Hispanic elected to serve as a Chicago alderman, as well as an array of other facts of historic importance; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of November, 2012, do hereby recognize the One-Hundredth Anniversary of the graduation of the first Hispanic to graduate from the John Marshall law School; and
 
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the John Marshall Law School.
