Resolution for Pastor Austin Willie Smith, Jr
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago are hereby informed of the passing of Pastor Austin Willie Smith, Jr., a devoted pastor and community advocate, by Alderman Sandi Jackson; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Austin Willie Smith, Jr., was born September 17,1951 in Pollocksville, North Carolina, to the late Austin and Minnie Hicks Smith; and
WHEREAS, he was the Pastor.of Merrill Avenue Baptist Church, which was later expanded to Compassion Baptist, located on 2505 E. 95th Street in the 7th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Smith religiously demonstrated a strong faith in GOD and love for the global community. Pastor Smith was not merely content with God impacting his congregation, but he wanted all ends of the Earth to know God's word. Wherever God positioned him, Pastor Smith was committed to his call of making compassionate disciples for Jesus Christ; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Austin Willie Smith, Jr., is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Smith, and his loving children, Sauda (Duane), Faith, Stephen and James. His grandchildren, Jasmine, Joy, Hope and Jovanni Austin; his adoring siblings, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; the congregation of Compassion Baptist Church; and a multitude of brothers and sisters in Christ and friends; and
WHEREAS, Pastor Smith will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him; now and therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members ofthe City Council ofthe City of Chicago, gathered here this January 17, 2013, do hereby express our sorrow due to the death of Pastor Austin Willie Smith, Jr., and extend to his family and friends our deepest sympathy, and
