A Resolution Celebrating Delta Sigma Theta's Centennial Anniversary
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded in 1913 at Howard University by 22 college students and is now the single largest African-American woman's organization in the country; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history. Delta Sigma Theta has consistently demonstrated its commitment to addressing inequality including participation in the 1913 Women's Suffrage March; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta's members have included influential historical figures such as Mary McLeod Bethune, Shirley Chisholm, Lena Home, Barbara Jordan, Wilma Rudolph, and Dr. Betty Shabazz; and
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has an ongoing history of serving the communities where their chapters are located, which include resources for young men and women, literacy, career development, homeownership, and medical services; and
WHEREAS, In 1921, sorority founders Oceola Macarthy Adams and Marguerite Young Alexander helped establish the Delta Sigma Theta chapter at the University of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta established Destee Inc., as a public service oriented non-profit organization with a special focus on working with young girls in Chicago to help them with their academic and socio-emotional needs; and
WHEREAS, On March 23,2013, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will commemorate their Centennial Anniversary with their "Centennial Torch Ceremony and March", which will pass through 22 U.S. cities including Chicago; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the work they do as part of their sorority, members of Delta Sigma Theta regularly volunteer for community service projects and events; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the City Council ofthe City of Chicago assembled this 13th day of March, 2013 do hereby acknowledge the important work of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and congratulate them on their Centennial Anniversary.
