^OllBTBOlS • Tne Members of fhis Chamber were deeply saddened to learn of the death on August 31, 2013, at age 84, of LeRoy Martin, a former Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department; and

WHEREAS, An alumnus of Crane Technical High School, Superintendent Martin received a Bachelor's degree in psychology in 1972 and a Master's degree in public administration in 1976 from Roosevelt University; and

WHEREAS, Superintendent Martin was imbued with a sterling work ethic. In his youth, he earned a living shining shoes on the City's West Side, then became a bus driver before joining the Chicago Police Department in 1956, where he started as a patrolman on a beat in the Burnside district on the City's South Side; and

WHEREAS, A 36-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Superintendent Martin, through diligence and dedication, rose through the ranks within the Department and was promoted to several distinguished positions, including Sergeant in 1965, Lieutenant in 1975 and Superintendent in 1987; and

WHEREAS, LeRoy Martin was appointed Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department by the late Mayor Harold Washington, the position he held until his retirement in 1992. A tough, fair and visionary leader, Superintendent Martin was credited for vigorously fighting gang violence and drug crimes, promoting professionalism and initiating collaborations with state and federal law enforcement agencies; and
