RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Mitchell has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of sixty-seven; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Oak Park, Richard "Dick" Mitchell was an award-winning journalist and the loving husband of Doreen, nee Wurster; and

WHEREAS, A native of New York, Richard "Dick" Mitchell began his career as a reporter at the Elmira Star-Gazette and worked for the Rochester Democrat Ss Chronicle before joining the Chicago Sun-Times in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Mitchell brought to the newsroom a gentlemanly grace, intelligence and integrity; and

WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Mitchell rose through the ranks of the Chicago Sun-Times to become Deputy Metro Editor and Sunday Editor; and

WHEREAS, During his journalism career, Richard "Dick" Mitchell was known for his unruffled calm under pressure, especially when dealing with "heater" stories like the 1971 Attica prison uprising; and

WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Mitchell won awards for his investigative stories on the penal system and campaign financing; and

WHEREAS, To his many colleagues, Richard "Dick" Mitchell was both respected for his professionalism and beloved for his kindness; and

WHEREAS, After retiring in 1995, Richard "Dick" Mitchell enjoyed traveling the world with his wife and often visited France; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Richard "Dick" Mitchell serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Richard "Dick" Mitchell to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Richard "Dick" Mitchell will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Richard "Dick" Mitchell imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, ...
