MEMORIAL RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Elise Marie Mann, on October 3, 2013, at the age of forty-eight; and
 
WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of her passing by The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
 
WHEREAS, The beloved daughter of Sylvia and the late Robert E. Mann; cherished sister of Stephen G. Mann, Stuart D. Mann (Sara William-Mann), Laurie A. Mann; loving aunt of Alex, Adam, Siena, Aaron, Kaia, Simone, Kezia and Remy; fond great-aunt of Adriana; dear niece of Cynthia Romagnoli and treasured friend of many. Elise leaves a legacy of faith, compassion, dignity and love; and
 
WHEREAS, Elise grew up in the intellectually active household of her father, Hyde Park state legislator, the late Robert E. Mann, and her mother Sylvia Mann, who nurtured her sensitivity to the needs of others, equal rights and equal justice. Caring a great deal about women's empowerment and social justice causes, she was driven to work hard for those who were underserved and to do the right thing for vulnerable people. She truly had a passion for justice on every front; and
 
WHEREAS, Elise attended Kenwood Academy, then went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School. She worked for what is now the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and was executive director of the now-defunct Women United for a Better Chicago. She had been working for the City of Chicago in procurement when she became Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services, which is now the Department of Family and Support Services; and
 
WHEREAS, Among the awards that Elise received for her work are, Mason Fellow through Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics, a best practices award from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, and recognition for her service to the Metropolitan Tenants Organization; and
WHEREAS, Elise had been an Obama Fellow for the 2012 Presidential election and had worked on the Aldermanic races for Toni Preckwinkle, now the Cook County Board President.
 
WHEREAS, Elise will be deeply missed, but the memory of her character, intelligence and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved her; now, therefore,
 
Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this thirteenth day of November 2013, do hereby express our sorrow on the death of Elise Marie Mann and express to her family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
fie It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Elise Marie Mann asratqken of our honor, gratitude, and respect. ^
