Title: Gratitude extended to Etta B. Mikell for service to Englewood community

IN CELEBRATION OF ETTA B. MIKELL
WHEREAS, Etta B. Mikell has been an active and vital member of her Englewood community for over 60 years; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this occasion by the Honorable JoAnn Thompson, Alderman of the 16th Ward; and

WHEREAS, born in Mississippi and relocating with her siblings to Chicago in the early 1940's, Etta Mikell married Cardell Mikell, a young World War II Army Veteran from Jefferson, Mississippi, in 1945 and started their family in Englewood; and
WHEREAS, despite experiencing the devastating loss of her husband in 1970 to a tragic and sudden workplace accident, Mrs. Mikell committed herself to supporting, raising and educating her six children in the Englewood Community; and
WHEREAS, while working at George Gershwin Elementary School, Mrs. Mikell touched the lives of hundreds of children, instilling in every student the value of an education and the importance of returning and investing in future generations of the Englewood community; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mikell has been a dynamic part of the Englewood Community for six decades as a homeowner, participant of the Neighborhood Block Committee, 35-year parishioner of Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ and election judge for the Democratic Party. Mrs. Mikell continues to serve her community by providing clothes and Christmas toys to needy families, and is known for sharing her homegrown vegetables and flowers with her neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Alderman JoAnn Thompson and the 16th Ward of Chicago, wishes to celebrate Etta B. Mikell and her selfless contributions to the Englewood community; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of December, 2013 do hereby extend our thanks and congratulations to Etta B. Mikell on her long life of service to her community and give our best wishes for the future; and
