RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-nine; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A resident of Wilmette, James C. Dowdle was a prominent broadcasting executive and the loving husband of Sally, nee Sayers; and
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle was the much-adored father of Jim, Colleen, Jeanne, Sarah and the late Pati, and the grandfather of eighteen; and
 
WHEREAS, The son of a building contractor, James C. Dowdle was raised in the South Shore neighborhood and graduated from Loyola Academy and the University of Notre Dame; and
 
WHEREAS, After serving his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps, James C. Dowdle embarked on a nearly four-decade long career in the broadcasting industry; and
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle worked in sales and management positions at several television stations across the country before he was hired by the Tribune Company in 1981; and
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle earned a reputation as a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in the transformation of the Tribune Company into a major media conglomerate; and
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle oversaw the June 1981 purchase of the Chicago Cubs; and
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle hired legendary announcer Harry Caray away from the Chicago White Sox and installed highly respected Minnesota Twins General Manager Andy MacPhail as the President and CEO of the Cubs; and
 
WHEREAS, Following a long and illustrious career, James C. Dowdle retired from the Tribune Company in 1999; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of James C. Dowdle serve as an example to all; and
 
 
WHEREAS, James C. Dowdle will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, James C. Dowdle imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of March, 2014, do hereby commemorate James C. Dowdle for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James C. Dowdle. /
