6T6QS > 2014 has been a blockbuster year for basketball at Chicago's Morgan Park High School, where the boys basketball team, known as the "Mustangs," put on a full-court press to win the Illinois High School Association Class 3A State Championship; and
 
WHEREAS, Located at the intersection of IIIth Street and Vincennes Avenue on Chicago's South Side, Morgan Park High School has a long tradition of excellence in academics and athletics; and
 
WHEREAS, On March 22, 2014, Morgan Park's star-studded boys basketball team captured the state title with a strong fourth-quarter performance to overcome the Lincoln High School Railsplitters, 59-49, at Bradley University's Carver Arena in Peoria; and
 
WHEREAS, Lincoln High School went from "in control" to "out of the game" in a matter of minutes after the Mustangs went on a 26-2 run, erasing a 13-point advantage and ripping the first-place trophy from Lincoln High School. Leading 39-26 with two minutes left in the third quarter, the Mustang's game-changing run was ignited by a Torry Johnson steal that led to a Lamont Walker lay-up and a steal of an inbound pass and two lay-ups within one minute by reserve guard Dellan Whately; and
 
WHEREAS, In the fourth quarter, after Morgan Park took the lead on two Josh Cunningham free throws, the Mustangs head coach, Nick Irvin, made adjustments by extending the zone and pressuring the opposition, causing Lincoln High School to make turnovers and miss shots; and
 
WHEREAS, Morgan Park's title-winning performance was made more memorable by the fact that it marked the second straight year that the state championship was won by Morgan Park High School's Boys Basketball team; and

WHEREAS, All of Chicago is proud of Morgan Park High School's Boys Basketball team and of the coaches, teachers and administrators at Morgan Park High School, who helped make the 2013-2014 season a "year to remember" for all of the school's students; now, therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this second day of April, 2014, do hereby extend our heartiest congratulations and best wishes for continued success to the Morgan Park High School Boys Basketball team's head coach, Nick Irvin, and team members, Dellan Whatley, Charlie Moore, Jarrin Randle, Jamal Burton, Torry Johnson, Jelani Hardy, Markus Johnson, Josh Cunningham, Alonzo Chatman, Lamont Walker, Alonzo Taylor, Antonio Alsup, Lamous Brown, and Mannie Robinson; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the aforementioned persons as a token of our appreciation and esteem.
