Resolution

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that members of this Chamber learned of the death of Benjamin Roettgen at the age of seventy; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his passing by The Honorable John A. Pope; and

WHEREAS, born in 1943 and a life-long Chicago Southsider, Benjamin attended Bret Harte Elementary and Hyde Park High School, continuing at South East Junior College until his university studies were interrupted by his service in the United State Army; and

WHEREAS, while admirably serving our country for four years, Benjamin earned a German Linguist Diploma from the Army Security Agency and was deployed to Meisenheim, Germany, and upon return from the army, was determined to continue with his studies and enrolled at Roosevelt University where he received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration; and

WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Benjamin taught Sunday School and was an active participant at his parish teaching Sunday School classes and volunteering at events. He was an adult advisor for the 4th District Explorers Program from 1997 to 2001 and was a Unit Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America Chicago Area Council from 2005 to 2011. A warm and friendly presence, he was admired by the youth he mentored for his wisdom and approachability; and

WHEREAS, Benjamin will be greatly missed by his community but his legacy of hard work and kind spirit will live on his three children, Rebecca Ann Andruskiewicz, Kurt William Roettgen, Kevin Benjamin Roettgen, and wife, Barbara. He and his wife, married for 45 years, are a true testament to beauty of a life of love and commitment; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the mayor and members of the City Council of the city of Chicago gathered here this second day of April, 2014, do hereby express our sorrow on the passing of Benjamin Roettgen and express to his family and friends our deepest sympathy; and
