RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Seven Illinois veterans have been honored by the nation of France for their heroic actions during World War II; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of their recognition by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, Richard Guimond, Howard Haas, Edgar Ireland, Philip Mascarello, Anthony Matkovich, Courtney Shanken, and posthumously, William Moreland, were presented with the Legion of Honor Medal, France's highest award, on November 5, 2010; and
 
WHEREAS, French Consul General Graham Paul credited these veterans with the preservation of liberty in his native France; and
 
WHEREAS, Amidst injury, exhaustion, and intense peril, these seven men battled tirelessly for a return to peace in France and throughout all of Europe; and
 
WHEREAS, In their humble acceptance of this award, several of these veterans remembered fondly the soldiers who fought alongside them more than six decades ago, many of whom never returned home; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled this tenth day of November, 2010, do hereby congratulate Richard Guimond, Howard Haas, Edgar Ireland, Philip Mascarello, Anthony Matkovich, Courtney Shanken, and posthumously, William Moreland on becoming recipients of France's Legion of Honor Award and do hereby express our gratitude for their heroic actions taken on behalf of our nation during World War II; and
