^QhoTCQS ' Since its establishment in 1975, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, renowned for its outstanding academic achievements, strong sports and extracurricular activities, consistently has ranked among the top high schools in the Nation and has earned numerous awards and accolades; and
WHEREAS, Whitney Young had a remarkable year in sports recently, with its boys basketball team, known as the "Dolphins," winning the 2014 Illinois High School Association Class 4A State Basketball Championship; and
WHEREAS, On March 22, 2014, the Whitney Young star-studded basketball team captured the state title, overcoming the Benet Academy Redwings, 46-44, at Bradley University's Carver Arena in Peoria, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Beginning with a lay-up on the game's opening possession, Whitney Young took the lead for good. With the battle of the big men not as big as anticipated, it was the play of 6-foot-3-inch guard Miles Reynolds that helped Whitney Young to its third state championship title. Stepping up his outside shooting, Reynolds knocked down three first-half three-pointers to lead the Dolphins with 19 points; and
WHEREAS, After trailing Whitney Young by 12 points in the second quarter, the Redwings were able to hang tough and cut the Dolphins' lead to just two points with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. With 19 seconds remaining in the game, Whitney Young's Paul White knocked in a pair of free throws, giving them the victory; and
WHEREAS, Whitney Young's' title-winning performance in the Illinois Class 4A State Basketball Championship comes after an incredibly difficult schedule, arguably the toughest national high school schedule in the Nation; and
WHEREAS, Whitney Young's spectacular victory over Benet was made all the more memorable by the fact that it marked a third state championship won by Whitney Young High School's Boys Basketball team. It was the Dolphins' first state championship since 2009; and
WHEREAS, All of Chicago is proud of Whitney Young High School's Boys Basketball team and of the coaches, teachers and administrators at Whitney Young High School, who helped to make the 2013-2014 athletic season a "year to remember" for all of the school's students; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this thirtieth day of April, 2014, do hereby extend our heartiest congratulations and best wishes for continued success to the Whitney Young High School Boys Basketball head coach, Tyrone Slaughter, and team members, Lucas Williamson, Erwin Henry, Miles Reynolds, Joseph Luzadder, Skyler Nash, Jeremaya Powell, Paul White, Rodney Herenton, Jr., McKinley Nelson, Jahlil Okafor, Christian Everett, Anthony Mosley, Jr., and Miles Baggett; and
