YVflBITBCtS ' °n *ne arternoon of September 28, 2013, four quick-thinking and selfless Chicago Department of Transportation employees averted tragedy by freeing a severely injured motorist from a flaming vehicle; and
 
WHEREAS, While driving on the 7200 block of South Pulaski Road in the West Lawn neighborhood, a motorist lost control of her car, which crashed into a light pole and burst into flames; and
 
WHEREAS, The accident occurred near a Department of Transportation worksite, where an asphalt crew was repairing the busy thoroughfare; and
 
WHEREAS, Hearing the crash, the crew rushed to the burning vehicle, giving no thought to their own safety and ignoring the risk of injury; and
 
WHEREAS, The crew braved the flames, safely removed the driver from harm's way, and called 911; and
 
WHEREAS, The members of the Department of Transportation crew responsible for this heroic rescue are Asphalt Foreman David Torres, Motor Truck Driver Alex Hampton, and Laborers Christopher Haskell and John Vyhnanek; and
 
WHEREAS, These men are all proud union members, representing the Laborers International Union of North America, Local 1001, and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 700; and
 
WHEREAS, The asphalt crew's exemplary efforts enabled the Chicago Fire Department to transport the driver to the hospital, preventing further injury and possibly even death; and
 
 
WHEREAS, The bravery and self-sacrifice demonstrated by these City employees is an outstanding example of the importance of community and solidarity to all Chicagoans; and
 
WHEREAS, The City Council has been advised of this event by Alderman John Pope of the 10th Ward and Alderman Marty Quinn of the 13th Ward; now, therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, do hereby honor David Torres, Alex Hampton, Christopher Haskell, and John Vyhnanek for their courage and willingness to risk their own safety to save the life of another; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Messrs. Torres, Hampton, Haskell, and Vyhnanek, and placed on permanent record in their personnel files, as a token of our esteem and admiration.
