PROCLAMATION OF A DISASTER IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO

The City of Chicago is preparing for a potentially life-threatening winter storm starting on February 01, 2011. The storm is expected to be in the range of three to four inches per hour. Winds are expected to increase 40 to 50 miles per hour inland and 50 to 60 milers per near Lake Michigan. In addition, lake effect snow will start February 2, 2011 and may add additional inches of snow. The total accumulation in the City of Chicago is expected to be as much as 24 inches of snow.
In the interest of preserving the lives and property of the people of the City of Chicago and protecting the public peace, health, and safety, I hereby declare, pursuant to the provisions of Section 11 of the Illinois Emergency Management Act, (20 ILCS 3305/11), that a disaster, as defined by the Act, exists in the City of Chicago.
This proclamation activates the City of Chicago's emergency operations plan and authorizes the furnishing of aid and assistance necessary to carry out the plan. The Executive Director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) will serve as the coordinator of the plan and is authorized to carry out such functions as may be necessary to manage and coordinate the City's response pursuant to Chapter 2-29 of the Municipal Code of Chicago.
This proclamation is effective February 1, 2011 and shall continue for a period of not to exceed seven days, unless extended by the City Council.
