Sponsors: Lane, Lona
Attachments: 1. R2015-75.pdf
WHEREAS, according to the American Center of Disease Control (CDC), cancer claimed the lives of nearly 300,000 men in America each year; and
WHEREAS, the CDC also reports that the incidence of cancer for men varies by race and ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago City Council has been informed of this by 18th Ward Alderman Lona Lane; and
WHEREAS, statistics show that a higher percentage of men will die from cancer than women because they are typically diagnosed at a later stage; and
WHEREAS, in response to this sometimes deadly diagnosis, "Not 1 Forgotten" was created with no limitation as a grassroots effort focusing an awareness as a link to encourage men to get tested, support cancer research and to help offset the cost of mounting bills for those diagnosed without health insurance; and
WHEREAS, in 2013 Joel Gresham founded "Not 1 Forgotten" and designed the blue and black necktie as a reminder of men's cancer awareness as a national symbol of togetherness. The blue signifies hope and faith, and the black is for healing. Promoting awareness and education about men's cancer is a crucial element to improving the good health and well-being of men throughout the entire nation; and
WHEREAS, by facilitating early detection and improving the prognosis of men who have been diagnosed with cancer will eventually save further loss of lives. This movement has been taking place in several cities in Florida, and this year will take place in New York and Atlanta; and
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here in assembly this twentieth-first day of January, 2015 A.D., do hereby extend our support for the "Not 1 Forgotten" Men's Cancer Awareness Month and the initiative to prevent the loss of future lives of men to cancer and educate the nation on the importance of early detection.

Lona Lane
