RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward Brooke has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 95; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward Brooke was a decorated World War II veteran and the first African-American to serve in the United States Senate since Reconstruction; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Washington, D.C., the Honorable Edward Brooke served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in Italy as a member of the 366th Infantry Regiment; and
 
WHEREAS, Following the war, the Honorable Edward Brooke earned a law degree from Boston University and in 1962 was elected Attorney General ofthe State of Massachusetts; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward Brooke earned a reputation as a vigorous prosecutor against corruption and organized crime; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward Brooke was elected in 1966 to the United States Senate as a Republican from Massachusetts and earned a reputation as a staunch advocate for civil rights and affordable housing; and
 
WHEREAS, After leaving the Senate in the late 1970s, the Honorable Edward Brooke practiced law and served as the Chairman of the National Low Income Housing Coalition; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Edward Brooke serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Edward Brooke to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
 
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward Brooke was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Anne, and his three adoring children, Remi, Edwina and Edward, the Honorable Edward Brooke imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of January, 2015, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Edward Brooke for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Edward Brooke.
