8VBCIS ' Chicago is the urban heart of Illinois, the "Land of Lincoln"; and
 
WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, is one of Illinois' favorite sons; and
 
WHEREAS, A frequent visitor to Chicago, Mr. Lincoln won the nomination for the U.S. presidency at the Republican National Convention held at the 'Wigwam' (Lake Street near the River) in Chicago in 1860; and
 
WHEREAS, President Lincoln was responsible for the creation of the Medal of Honor, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Academy of Sciences, the system of Land-Grant Universities, the transcontinental railroad, the expansion of the western frontier through the Homestead Act, and the creation and standardization of the U.S. system of banking and paper money; and
 
WHEREAS, President Lincoln wrote and delivered three of our nation's greatest speeches, namely, the Cooper Union Address, the Gettysburg Address, and the Second Inaugural Address, which was written and delivered 150 years ago this year; and
 
WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 150fh Anniversary of the passage of the 13,h Amendment ending slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States and an Amendment that Abraham Lincoln, "The Great Emancipator," advocated and set the groundwork for through his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863; and
 
WHEREAS, The United States commemorates the 150,h Anniversary of the death and laying to rest of President Lincoln and the end of the Civil War which President Lincoln worked tirelessly to conclude in order to keep the nation united and free; and
 
 
WHEREAS, The State of Illinois' Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is celebrating its 10th Anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation, which preserves, protects, and advances Abraham Lincoln's rich legacy and raises funds and collections to benefit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, is celebrating its 15,h Anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, The Foundation has published Gettysburg Replies: The World Responds to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, a book that advances the legacy of Abraham Lincoln as well as 21st Century thought through the words of Chicagoans, Americans, and citizens across the globe for the benefit of our nation, the world, and its posterity; and
 
WHEREAS, Among the essayists who have contributed to Gettysburg Replies: The World Responds to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address are Wayne Whalen, Dede Harris, Sam Harris, Nancy Hop/at, Gary Johnson, Grace Richards, Eleanore Richards, Robert Richards, Richard Driehaus, Carla Knorowski, Angela Staron, Alderman Edward M. Burke, Alderman Will Burns, Richard Lindberg, Graham Peck and John Borling; now, therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby congratulate the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation on the occasion of its 15th Anniversary and the publishing of Gettysburg Replies: The World Responds to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Carla Knorowski and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.
