RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Shirley Velasquez has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Aldermen Edward M. Burke and Danny Solis; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Velasquez, nee Lozano, was the loving wife of the late Arturo, the first Mexican-American to serve on the Chicago City Colleges Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Velasquez's husband chaired a foundation which provided scholarships for Latino students and in 2007 the City Colleges named the Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute in his honor; and
WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Shirley Velasquez was involved in many civic endeavors and will long be remembered as a widely admired role model in the Latino community; and
WHEREAS, The proud and much-beloved matriarch of her family, Shirley Velasquez was the mother of Arthur, Carmen, Maria and Edward, the grandmother of eleven, the great-grandmother of 21 and the great-great grandmother of one; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Velasquez was the dear sister of Rito, Manuel, Angelo, the late Leopoldo, Angelina, Joseph, Virginia and Raymond; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Shirley Velasquez was a Founding Member of the Cordi Marian Auxiliary and Lady Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a former member of the Azteca Lions Club; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Shirley Velasquez serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Shirley Velasquez will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Shirley Velasquez imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of March, 2015, do hereby commemorate Shirley Velasquez for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
