RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Michael Malone, a multi-talented author, professor and administrator, has announced his retirement as Vice President for University Advancement at Northern Illinois University, effective June 30, 2015; and

WHEREAS, the City Council has been informed of this milestone event by the Honorable Robert W. Fioretti, Alderman of the 2nd Ward; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Malone is a native of Chicago's South Side and a graduate of Marist High School. He began his collegiate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a political science major and soon revealed a talent for writing: he won several university awards for his short stories. After graduating with honors in 1973, he was invited to attend the Graduate Writers' Workshop at Bowling Green State University, where he received his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1975; and

WHEREAS, for the next five years Mr. Malone taught literature, creative writing and composition at both the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses of the University of Illinois. He then redirected his creative talents to the fields of public relations and advertising, but still found time to write for publication: his works were published in such diverse outlets as the Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune Magazine, New Letters, Ascent, Sun-Times Book Week, Kansas Quarterly and others. He also won the 1983 National Endowment for the Arts Award for fiction, two awards from the Illinois Arts Council for fiction and the P.E.N. Syndicated Fiction award; and i
WHEREAS, in 1984 Mr. Malone joined Northern Illinois University, and was named its Vice President for University Advancement in 1998. In that capacity he headed several successful projects, including the university Centennial Celebration, the alumni association vetting of candidates for positions on the board of trustees, and the February 14 memorial Committee; and
