RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 101; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A resident of the South Side, Alva Doris Roberts was the loving wife of the late Bishop Isaiah; and
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts was the much-adored mother of Sharon and the grandmother of one to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Walls, Oklahoma, Alva Doris Roberts was involved in the rising popularity of African-American gospel music in the early days of radio; and
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts came to Chicago where her father sought work as a plasterer and she attended Wendell Phillips High School; and
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts met her future husband while attending services at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, a house of worship that welcomed rural southerners; and
 
WHEREAS, Roberts Temple was founded and built by her husband's father, Bishop William Matthew Roberts, in 1916; and
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts became known as the "First Lady" ofthe church which her husband led from 1955 to 1989; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Alva Doris Roberts serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, Alva Doris Roberts will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
 
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Alva Doris Roberts imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of May, 2015, do hereby commemorate Alva Doris Roberts for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Alva Doris Roberts.
