BVGCiS The Gates Millennium Scholars ("GMS") program gives outstanding minority students with significant financial need an opportunity for a college education by providing them with leadership training, mentoring, and financial, academic and social support; and
 
WHEREAS, Established in 1999 with a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the GMS program helps high-performing, low-income students grow into strong leaders in their professions and in their communities; and
 
WHEREAS, The GMS program has significantly improved the representation of minority groups in numerous academic disciplines and has contributed immeasurably to the diversification and enrichment of America's future leaders. Since its inception, the GMS Program has enabled more than 20,000 young men and women to attend and graduate from some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in our Nation; and
 
WHEREAS, To be selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar, students must be a member of a racial or ethnic minority group, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher, and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service or extracurricular activities. They are among the most talented and driven students in the United States; and
 
WHEREAS, Thirty-five of this year's 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars are graduating from high schools in the Chicago Public Schools ("CPS") system. This is the sixth time in the last seven years that CPS has had more Gates Millennium Scholars than any other school district in the Country; and
 
WHEREAS, All of Chicago is tremendously proud of the hard work and dedication of its Gates Millennium Scholars. They are the pride and future of Chicago; now, therefore,
