Resolution Honoring Esther Golar

 

 

WHEREAS, The members of the City Council learned with deep sorrow and regret of the death of our friend, State Representative Esther Golar, on Monday, September 21, 2015; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar was born in Chicago on April 16, 1944, one of nine children; she was a lifelong resident of Chicago's South Side Englewood Community, and was a graduate of Richard T. Crane High School and Malcolm X College; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar was a dedicated public servant and community leader, building local organizations, advocating for greater public safety and fighting for those who struggle; she was a resident board member of Neighborhood Housing services and a coordinator for the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy for more than 15 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar was a community service representative at Robert Fulton School, and she attended and volunteered at Trinity United Church of Christ; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar worked for the Chicago Polcie Department on Chicago's South and West sides in the Troubled Buildings Unit and as a Community Policing Coordinator, and she worked as a community organizer for the Chicago Alliance for Neighborhood Safety training residents to build friendlier and safer communities; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar joined the Illinois House of Representatives in January 2006 to fill a vacancy in the 6th Representative District; her commitment to constituent service is evident through her tireless advocacy on behalf of her constituents; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar's legislative achievements include the Senator Penny Severns Memorial Award for her advocacy for persons with disabilities, the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Leadership Award, and the Safer Foundation's CARRE Visionary Award for her outstanding contributions to eliminate employment barriers for people with criminal records; and

 

WHEREAS, Representative Golar was adored and respected by her friends, family, and colleagues and will be remembered for her resolve, her commitment to public service, her devotion to faith, her kindness and sense of humor, and for bringing levity to sometimes tense moments with her gift of song; and

 

WHEAREAS, the death of Representative Esther golar is deeply felt by her family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew and loved her, her presence in our community will be greatly missed; and now, therefore,

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 28th Day of October, 2015 AD, do hereby mourn the passing and honor the life of State Representative Esther Golar; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy ofthis resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Esther Golar.
