yOllBTeClS . At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2015, siblings Diavonnie and Devonte Ingram set out from their home in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood, headed to summer classes at the Chicago Housing Authority's Learn and Earn Program at Truman College; and

 

WHEREAS, When 15-year-old Diavonnie paused to tie her shoelace, a large man suddenly attacked, grabbing her from behind and dragging her toward the open doors of white van parked nearby; and

 

WHEREAS, Diavonnie caught hold of a nearby gate and screamed in alarm, but the man persisted in his attempt to abduct her; and

 

WHEREAS, In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, 13-year-old Devonte rushed to his sister's aid, grabbing her tightly by the legs and calling for help; and

 

WHEREAS, Surprised, the man released Diavonnie for a moment, only to seize her again, pulling on her backpack in an effort to throw her into the waiting van; and

 

WHEREAS, Despite her terror, Diavonnie managed to slip her arms from the straps of the backpack, allowing Devonte to help her to her feet and flee with her to safety; and

 

WHEREAS, Recognizing her brother's heroism, Diavonnie remarked to the media "I'm just glad he was there, because, if he wasn't, I would be on the news missing;" and

 

WHEREAS, The children's mother, Felicia Wings, echoed her daughter's accolades, proclaiming "My son to me is my hero, as well as hers. And he's always going to be our hero because he saved her life;" now, therefore.

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this 28th day of October, 2015, do hereby honor Devonte Ingram for his selfless display of bravery in the face of a profound threat to his beloved sister at the hands of a vile assailant; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to this courageous young man, as a token of our heartfelt appreciation and esteem.
