RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Hollander has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 75; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Hollander was the City of Chicago's first female Commissioner of the Department of Planning; and

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Hollander was appointed to the post by Mayor Harold Washington, Chicago's first African-American Mayor; and

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Hollander ably served from 1983 to 1989 and during her tenure pushed developers to create more ground-level retail spaces and shops when building office towers to bolster activity in the Loop; and

 

WHEREAS, As Planning Commissioner, Elizabeth Hollander also pushed for more construction jobs to be set aside for minorities; and

 

WHEREAS, Prior to her appointment to the influential post, Elizabeth Hollander served as the Director of the Metropolitan Planning Council; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Manhattan, Elizabeth Hollander attended Bryn Mawr College and worked early in her career as an employee of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1997, Elizabeth Hollander moved to Providence Rhode Island; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Elizabeth Hollander serve as an example to all;; and

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Hollander was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To her husband, Carl Kaestle, her son, Daniel, her daughter, Rachel and her four grandchildren, Elizabeth Hollander imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of October 2015, do hereby commemorate Elizabeth Hollander for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Elizabeth Hollander.
