RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Joel Hall Dancers & Center has enriched Chicago's arts scene for more than four decades through community dance performances and education; and
WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1974 the Chicago-based non-profit has embraced those who may otherwise not be exposed to the arts by providing dance classes along with local, national and international showcase performances; and
WHEREAS, The signature dance style of Joel Hall Dancers incorporates ballet, jazz, modern, funk, and "street dance" using contemporary jazz and house music to create an innovative and continuously evolving dance style that is appealing, relevant, and approachable; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the 1980s, the company performed at the Joyce Theatre in New York, MayFest in Scotland, the Stranmills Theatre in Belfast, the Bloomsbury Theatre in London and throughout the United Kingdom and the former Soviet Union; and
WHEREAS, During the 1990s, the Joel Hall Dancers focused on its Chicago identity through performances across the city; and
WHEREAS, In 1993 A destructive fire at the Joel Hall Dancers & Center studio in forced the company to relocate and rebuild; and
WHEREAS, Despite the challenges, the Joel Hall Dancers debuted "Nuts & Bolts" in 1994 — which quickly became a holiday staple in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Both the Joel Hall Dancers and its audience continue to represent a diversified spectrum of cultural, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, The creativity, hard work and dedication of the Joel Hall Dancers serve as an example to all; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-eighth day of October 2015, do hereby declare,that Saturday, November 21, 2015, shall be officially recognized as Joel Hall Day throughout Chicago and do hereby express every good wish for the continued success of the Joel Hall Dancers and Center as one of our City's premier dance companies; and
