RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE CREATION OF HONORARY FRED SAUFNAUER WAY

 

 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Fred Saufnauer passed away on September 7, 2016, at the age of 99; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Gilbert Villegas, Alderman ofthe 36th Ward, has apprised this august body of this notable man's achievements; and

WHEREAS, Fred Saufnauer attended St. Philemenias and Kelvin Park High School and lived for several years at the Guardian Angel Home for Children; and

WHEREAS, Fred Saufnauer began in the roofing business at the age of 13, since his father was in the business; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Saufnauer formed Better Roofing and Siding Company in 1937 at 2210 N. Cicero where he operated his business for sixty years; and

WHEREAS, The business expanded as Mr. Saufnauer acquired several nearby buildings. Better Roofing and Siding grew to over 20 employees and 23 trucks, becoming the largest roofing company in Chicago in the 1940's; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Saufnauer attempted to join the military during World Wax II, but was rejected because of a punctured eardrum; and

WHEREAS, He got married in 1939 to his sweetheart Olive Kamen. They had two daughters, Judy and Gail; and

WHEREAS, He bought a tavern on the same block as the roofing business and eventually sold it to his sister and her husband; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Saufnauer was a friend to such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Richard J. Daley; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members ofthe City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this First Day of November, 2016, do hereby recognize the accomplishments of Fred Saufnauer and acknowledge the naming of Honorary Fred Saufnauer Way on the 2200 block of North Cicero Avenue in his honor.
