RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle was the 38th President of Uruguay; and
WHEREAS, Born into a prominent political family, the Honorable Jorge Batlle was the son of a former President of Uruguay; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle worked as a lawyer and journalist before becoming a Senator and member of the lower house of Congress; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle served as President from 2000 to 2005; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, the Honorable Jorge Batlle was an ardent champion for free trade and successfully led his country out of a period of economic decline; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle also promoted closer ties with the United States government; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Jorge Batlle serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jorge Batlle was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Mercedes, and his beloved family, the Honorable Jorge Batlle imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this ninth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Jorge Batlle for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
