Whereas

, In 1966, Maria Piers, Lorraine Wallach, Barbara Taylor Bowman, and Irving B. Harris founded the Chicago Institute for Early Childhood Education, which later became known as the Erikson Institute; and

 

V WHEREAS, The Erikson Institute was founded to ensure there would be> proper training and preparation for teachers working with young children enrolled in the new Head Start program created by President Lyndon Johnson as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964; and ;

 

, WHEREAS, One of the first organizations in the United States to focus on the importance of a child's first years, the" Erikson Institute has engaged in groundbreaking work in the field of eafly childhood development; and ,

 

WHEREAS, The Erikson Institute prepares students of child development, social work, and early childhood education to become leaders who strive to improve the educational, social, emotional and physical well-being of children, families, and communities; and

 

•' WHEREAS, A trusted resource withflocal and international programs, the Erikson Institute contributes to the vitality of our communities in Chicago by enhancing the well-being and education of young children; and :      ]y- ;

 

• / WHEREAS, The Erikson Institute has long been committed;to understands the child in context, as well as advocating for social justice; and ';

 

WHEREAS, In recent years, the Erikson Institute has expanded; its influence
through research projects, direct service, and; special initiatives that explore
contemporary issues, such as improving teacher training in early literacy and
early math, researching mindfulness techniques to support a child's learning, :
supporting non-profit leaders and policymakers with yital information about
child:, development, applying . developmentqlly appropridte^herdpeutic
interventions, and sharing its expertise^with families so they can meaningfully
use technology with their children; and v

Institute's  child-focused   mission; has been unwavering, and it continues to earn recognition as the Nation's premier , independent institution for training teachers who help ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential; how,Therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor arid the Members of the City Council, assembled this ninth day of November; 2016, do hereby honor the Erikson Institute on its fiftieth anniversary, and applaud its invaluable contributions to the education and development of the children of Chicago; and /

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That q suitable copy of this resolutions be presented to the Erikson Institute as a token of our appreciation and esteem.
