RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Janet Reno has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Janet Reno was the first female to serve as United States Attorney General; and

WHEREAS, The daughter of a newspaper reporter, Janet Reno was born in Miami, Florida and graduated from Cornell University and Harvard Law School; and

WHEREAS, Janet Reno enjoyed a trailblazing career in government and remained in office longer than any other Attorney General of the 20th Century; and

WHEREAS, During her highly esteemed tenure, Janet Reno shaped the United States' responses to the most prominent legal cases of the 1990s; and

WHEREAS, Janet Reno prosecuted cases ranging from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Texas to Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman's involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombings to Microsoft's anti-competitive violations; and

WHEREAS, Known for her level of heightened integrity and professionalism, Janet Reno earned a reputation as a leader who was adamant about separating her department from politics; and

WHEREAS, Janet Reno won high marks outside Washington, D.C., for her plain-spoken manner and respect for the rule of law; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Janet Reno serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Janet Reno was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Janet Reno imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate Janet Reno for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Janet Reno.
