RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Don Savage, a Chicago 39l Ward resident and mainstay of the Sauganash community, has been a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan for his entire life, and at the age of 98, finally saw his beloved team win the World Series; and

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of his love of the game of baseball and the Chicago Cubs by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

WHEREAS, As an 11-year-old boy, Savage delivered newspapers to afford a bleacher ticket in Wrigley Field to the 1929 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics; and

WHEREAS, Don describes himself as "obsessed" with baseball, and is a living encyclopedia of Cubs facts from over the last 100 years, including the starting lineup of the 1927 Cubs; and

WHEREAS, More than just a fan of the game, Dan spent decades playing softball in multiple citywide leagues, winning a small collection of championship trophies and earning his way into the 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Don was there when the Chicago Cubs hosted World Series games in 1932 and 1935, and in 1938, when the Cubs were swept in four games by Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio's Yankees. Savage was also sitting along Wrigley's left field line during Game 6 of the 1945 World Series, when the Cubs lost a 7-3 lead in the 8th inning and dragged the afternoon into extra innings against the Detroit Tigers; and

WHEREAS, Today, Don lines up at the Wrigley Field press office every February to pick up tickets for senior games. He gathers dozens of neighbors and church friends, serves drinks in his backyard then buses them to the ballpark; and

WHEREAS, In 2016, Don was able to see the Chicago Cubs win the World Series, in a dramatic 7 game series that lasted until the 10th inning of Game 7; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the rich history to which Don has witnessed and contributed, the Chicago City Council believes that Don is richly deserving of adulation and good wishes as we celebrate the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago gathered here this sixteenth day of November 2016, do hereby express our best wishes to Don

Savage.
