CONGRATULATIONS EXTENDED TO KERN IVOR RODRIGUES

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this legislative body to honor those young citizens whose dedication to their studies and community endeavors, serve as an example to others; and

WHEREAS, It is with great honor that we are pleased to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Kern Ivor Rodrigues, a junior in high school, for being selected for membership in the National Honor Society; and

WHEREAS, On Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Lincoln-Way Central High School in Mokena, his very proud parents, Sanjay and Lisa Rodrigues, brother, Andrew, and his grandparents, William and Angeline Carney joined Kern for his formal induction into the National Honor Society; and

WHEREAS, The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization in the United States which may consist of many chapters in high schools. Selection may be based on four criteria: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The National Honor Society may require some kind of service to school, the community, or other organizations. The time spent working on these projects contributes towards the monthly service hour requirement. The National Association of Secondary School Principals officially established the National Honor Society in 1921. Although many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Dr. Edward Rynearson's leadership constitutes the growth of the organization of the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. The new National Honor Society organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators; and

WHEREAS, The National Honor Society is an organization for high school students, such as Kern Rodrigues, who demonstrate remarkable scholarship, service, leadership and character. The NHS constitutions specified that members must have a cumulative scholastic average of 85, a grade point average of a 3.0 or a comparable level of achievement, although individual schools such as Lincoln-Way Central, raise the grade point average to a 3.5 minimum achievement level. A faculty council votes to approve or deny new members. Since the National Honor Society's beginning, there have been four main purposes that have guided chapters. They are: 1). To create enthusiasm for scholarship; 2). To stimulate a desire to render service; 3). To promote leadership; and 4). To develop character in the students of secondary schools; and

WHEREAS, The National Honor Society's motto is noblesse obligeies. Translated from the French language this means " nobility obligates" and according to the French Wiktionary, it has two meanings: 1). Whom ever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly and 2). (Figuratively) One must act in a fashion that conforms with one's position and with the reputation that one has earned; and

WHEREAS, The leaders of this great city are cognizant of the importance of our youths and their education; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this fourteenth day of December 2016 A.D., do hereby offer our heartiest congratulations to Kern Ivor Rodrigues upon the occasion of his induction into the National Honor Society and extend to this very fine young citizen our best wishes for future prosperity and fulfillment.
