Whereas                     ,: The Members of this Chamber wish to recognize, the

accomplishments of-the 2016 Chicago Cubs baseball team, winners of Major League. Baseball's National . League .Central Division, the -National League Pennant and the World Series;.and

 

. WHEREAS, Winning the World Series is just the latest achievement in the longi storied history of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have now won four division titles-, eleven National League Pennants and three World Series;;and

 

WHEREAS, Established in 1876 as the Chicago White Stockings, later
changing their name to the Chicago Colts, the Chicago Orphans and finally
settling on the name Chicago Cubs in 1903, the Cubs are the oldest Major
League Baseball team to have played its entire existence in a single city . and
have entertained countless bdseball fahs-in.Chicago and around-the country-;
and

WHEREAS, Chicago • Cubs fans .enjoy what many consider the most venerated ballpark in the country, Wrigley Field. .With its iconic ivy-covered outfield walls and old-fashioned;scoreboard, the Friendly .Confines is the most celebrated ballpark in the nation; and .

 

WHEREAS, The 2016 Chicago- Cubs season was the 145th- of .the Cubs franchise, the 141st in the National League and the 101 s> at Wrigley. Field. The Cubs, were managed by Joe Maddon in. his second, season as Cubs manager. With 103 victories, the Cubs had the best .record in the major leagues, finishing 17.5 games ahead of the Cenitrdr'.bivjsion'-runner-up^an^^lbng-tim'e. rival, the Sf. Louis Cardinals. It was the first.season the Cubs -had' more-.than TOO wins since 1935 and marked the most victories the team has had-since .1910; and '

 

 

WHEREAS, In the playoffs, the mighty Cubs defeated two. historic and highly regarded California.franchises: the San FranciscoGiants in the National League Division Series, three games to one; and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League. Championship Series, four games to two. As a result, the Cubs won their first National League Pennant in:71 years and advanced to the World Series to play the American League Pennant Winner/the Cleveland Indians; arid

 

WHEREAS, The World Series began on October. 25 in Cleveland and the Chicago Cubs demonstrated why,they are' champions. When the going gets tough,,the Cubs start winning. And win they did. Game Five at Wrigley Field was close but the Cubs -pulled out a three-to-two victory, sending the.Series back to Cleveland, where the Cubs needed to win the final two games on the road. In Game Six, they prevailed nine to three. This set the stage for Game Seven; and

 

WHEREAS, Oh November. 2, Game Seven .pitted Cubs' pitching ace Kyle
Hendricks, who had the lowest ERA (2.13) in Major League Baseball in 2016,
against Cleveland's- Corey. Kluber, who had already won Game One and Game
Four of the World Series. Game Seven lived up to expectations and more.- The
Cubs started the scoring quickly with a Dexter Fowler lead-off home run. By.the
end of six innings, the Cubs-held a 6 to 3-lead. But in the. bottom of. the eighth,
due in part to a two-run. home run, the Indians tied the game. At the end of nine
innings the score-was still tied 6 to 6.' After a seventeen minute rain delay, the
10th inning started and the Cubs scored two runs on a double by Ben Zobrist
and a single by. Miguel Montero. In the bottom of the tenth, Cleveland scored
one run before the ,Cubs got the final out, winning the game 8 to 7. Baseball
experts have declared Game Seven as one of the most dramatic ih World Series
history; and'     .

- WHEREAS, Ben Zobrist of the Cubs was named Most Valuable Player of the World Series on the strength of his play throughout .the Series and .his clutch 10th inning double ih Game Seven, which drove in a run, giving, the Cubs a- 7 to 6 lead they never relinquished;.and :

 

 

WHEREAS, This historic 2016-season marked the Cubs' first appearance in the World Series since 1945, and their first World Series victory since 1908. Holy Cow', 2016 really was a remarkable season, to say the least; and .

 

WHEREAS, The 201.6 line-up for-the Chicago Cubs was an impressive One. Led by an amazing pitching .staff including Jake Arrieta, Aroldis Chapman, Carl , Edwards, Jr., Justin Grimm, Jason Hammer, Kyle Hendricks, John Lackey,-Jon Lester, Mike Montgomery, Hector Rondon, Pedro Strop and Travis Wood, the Cubs also enjoyed strong performances at the plate and'in the field by Albert Almorg, Jr., Javier Bgez, Kris. Bryant, Trevor Cahill, Chris Coghlani Willson Contreras, Dexter Fowler, Jason Haywdrd, Munenori Kawasaki, Tommy La Stella Miguel. M.ontero, Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, Addison Russell, Kyle Schwarber, Matt Szczur, Jorge Soler, Joe Smith, Rob Zastryzny and Ben Zobrist; and

 

WHEREAS, All of Chicago is proud of the great accomplishments of the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and we wish them continuing, greatness in'future seasons; now, therefore

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of. Chicago, assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2016; do hereby congratulate, owner Tom Ricketts, President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein, President, of Business Operations, Crane-Ken ney, and the Chicago Cubs players on a remarkable season that captivated baseball fans not only in Chicago but also around the globe; and f.;

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Chicago Cubs organization as d token of our good wishes and congratulations.
