WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber learned of God in His Infinite Wisdom, calling home Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss, most beloved citizen, to his eternal reward on March 16, 2017; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Walter Burnett, Jr., Alderman of the 27th Ward and the Honorable Emma Mitts, Alderman of the 37th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss, was born February 5, 1948, in Yazoo, Mississippi, to George Washington Moss and Doris Montgomery, both of whom preceded him in death. Jackie confessed his love for Christ at an early age. He married his childhood sweetheart, Minnie B. Moss, in 1968, and of that union, two sons were born. Jackie was known by his family and friends as a very strong willed and spirited person who loved life and people; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss was very active in his community. In 1972, he and Minnie organized the Jackson Cougars Softball team, to keep young men in the community active and off the streets. Jackie also volunteered as a basketball, football, and baseball coaching assistant for Marshall High School. His passion for helping youth led him to volunteering citywide with the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, to donating basketball jerseys to the St. Paul Lutheran boys basketball team, to countless other ways in which he showed people he cared about them and that they mattered; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss graduated from Coahoma Agricultural High School in 1965, from there he attended Mississippi Industrial College where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology in August of 1971; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss led a distinguished professional career. Jackie was awarded for his dedication as Precinct Captain of the 28th Precinct / 37th Ward, under former Alderman Percy Giles, and later became President of the organization. He served many years with the Raytheon Corporation, 76th Infirmary Westside Holistic, and was the 37th Ward Superintendent for the City's Department of Streets and Sanitation from 1998-2005. And until his untimely death, Jackie was Assistant General Superintendent of Street Operations. Jackie was in charge ofthe Cook County Sherriff s Work Alternative Program (SWAP), a key resource for the Department of Streets and Sanitation. These work crews, under the supervision of the Sherriff s Deputies', have worked to clean vacant lots, viaducts, and parkways, throughout the entire City of Chicago since 2005; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss touched the lives of all who knew him through his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence, and compassion will live on in those who knew and loved him dearly; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss was preceded in death by his loving wife Minnie, and adopted son, Kurtizz Strong, and he leaves to cherish his memory: sons, Marvin(Dawn), George(Equita), and Darius; brother, Autrey; grandchildren, George Strong, Nia Kameron, and Amiya; two brother's-in-law, Johnny and Terry(Stephanie); five sister's-in-law, Darlena Burnett(Walter), Vallie Allen, Virginia Williams of Milwaukee, WI., Diana Strong, and Birda Williams; two aunts, Barbara and Mable Montgomery; five nieces; ten nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends; now, therefore,

 

Be It Resolved, That we, the Mayor, and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled here this twenty-second day of March 2017 do hereby express our deepest sorrow on the death of Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss and extend to his family and friends our sincerest sympathy; and

 

Be It Further Resolved, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mr. Jackie Monroe Moss, as a token of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
