RESOLUTION DEDICATING A HORSE OF HONOR TO DANIEL E. HOWARD

 

 

WHEREAS, Chicago Police Officer Daniel E. Howard was just 26 when he was killed in a car crash in the line of duty on the morning of January 1, 1975; and

 

WHEREAS, The Horse of Honor program is a public art campaign honoring police officers who have been killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty; and

 

WHEREAS, A Horse of Honor is being dedicated to a fallen officer, Daniel E. Howard; and

 

WHEREAS, The Mayor and City Council have been informed of this honor by the Honorable Patrick D. Thompson, Alderman of the 11th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel E. Howard was born on April 28, 1948 in Chicago, IL to the late Edward F. and Mary L. Howard (nee Wright); and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel grew up on the south side of Chicago in the Canaryville neighborhood and was the eldest brother to Edward, Sheila, Nancy, Patty, Peggy and Mary Beth; and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel attended St. Gabriel and Visitation Grammar Schools and was a graduate of De La Salle Institute; and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel worked several jobs after high school until he was drafted into the United States Army on January 2, 1968; and

 

WHEREAS, Shortly after he returned from serving his country in Vietnam, Daniel became a Chicago Police Officer and was issued Star #5983; and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel and his partner, Donald E. Andrews died as honorable heroes as they selflessly put their lives on the line to serve and protect the citizens of the City of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Daniel E. Howard's Star #5983 was retired in 2005 by Superintendent Phil Cline; and

 

WHEREAS, This well-deserved Horse of Honor painted by Erika Vazanna and sponsored by Daniel's family, friends and Canaryville residents will allow Daniel's legacy to live on forever, now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, gathered here this twenty-eighth day of June, 2017, do hereby dedicate this Horse of Honor to Daniel E. Howard.

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Daniel E. Howard.
