RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING INTERNATIONAL DRUG OVERDOSE

AWARENESS DAY

 

 

 

WHEREAS, International Drug Overdose Awareness Day will be held on August 31, 2017;and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Daniel Solis, Alderman of the 25th Ward, has informed the City Council of this important event; and

WHEREAS, The United Nations estimates that there are approximately 187,000 deaths worldwide annually caused by drug overdoses. Most of those overdoses were due to opiates. Individuals recently returned to society are much more likely to overdose; and

WHEREAS, The United States leads the world in drug overdose deaths. There are approximately 44,000 drug overdose deaths a year, or 120 deaths each day; and

WHEREAS, This problem is not limited to the United States. For example, there are thousands of drug overdose deaths annually in Australia. Approximately 12,000 Europeans die every year from drug overdoses; and

WHEREAS, Drug overdoses harm not just the victims, but their friends and family. Furthermore, drug overdose deaths are preventable. International Drug Overdose Awareness Day helps focus attention on the insidious problem of drug overdoses throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, There is an event being held in Chicago at 723 West 111th Street on August 31st to commemorate this day with activities including a balloon launch; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this 26th day of July, 2017, do hereby acknowledge International Drug Overdose Awareness Day on August 31, 2017.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Chicagoans are encouraged to attend a International Drug Overdose Awareness; Day event and wear a silver badge or a purple armband on August 31st to show their support for Drug Overdose Awareness Day.
