WHEREAS, On the 'afternoon of .July' 14, 1988,''Bernie responded to -q hostage; situation involving a heavily armed gunman at 7237 S. Stony Island Avenue; arid ".

 

WHEREASyAs Bernie anct^bis'^llow''officers surfounde'd'-the property, Berhie peered,
around the comer from his position for a split second and was shot in the forehead by the
gunmafi; arid    -

WHEREAS, .Bernie was rushed to Michael Reese Hospital, where he underwent six
hours of sy.rgery to remove the bullet; and .'  '. -

WHEREAS, As a result of the traumatic injuries he suffered that day, Bernie would require surgeries, therapy, and medical attention for the rest, of his life; and

 

 

WHEREAS, In spite of their severity, Bernie never let his injuries get the better of him. He continued to display his love and passion for the Chicago Police Department, often telling stories about his time as a police officer and about his family; and

 

WHEREAS, As a husband, father, police officer, and vital member of his community and our City, Bernie touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness, generosity, and spirit. He will be deeply missed, but the memory of his character, intelligence, and •compassion will live on in his beloved wife Denise, his sons Erik, Craig, and Adam, and in all those who knew and loved him; and

 

WHEREAS, The legacy of Bernie's dedication, devotion, strength, perseverance, and sacrifice .serves as an example to us all, and has earned him the respect of all who knew him; now, therefore,
