RESOLUTION

 

 

 

 

WHEREAS, M. Cherif Bassiouni has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 79; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of the Streeterville neighborhood, M. Cherif Bassiouni was the loving and devoted husband of Elaine; and

WHEREAS, M. Cherif Bassiouni was the much-adored stepfather of Lisa Capitanini and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Raised in Egypt, M. Cherif Bassiouni was the son of an Egyptian ambassador and the grandson of the first president of the Egyptian Senate; and

WHEREAS, M. Cherif Bassiouni authored 24 books and was an emeritus professor of law at DePaul University where he taught from 1964 to 2012; and

WHEREAS, An internationally renowned human rights advocate, M. Cherif Bassiouni served in 22 United Nations appointments; and

WHEREAS, M. Cherif Bassiouni was one of the founders in 1990 of the International Human Rights Law Institute and during his tenure advocated the use of international criminal courts to punish human rights abuses; and

WHEREAS, M. Cherif Bassiouni investigated war crimes in Bosnia, monitored human rights in Afghanistan and helped to craft Iraq's new constitution; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of M. Cherif Bassiouni serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, M. Cherif Bassiouni imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby commemorate M. Cherif Bassiouni for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of M. Cherif Bassiouni.
