RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 77; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov was a Soviet officer known as "the man who saved the world" for his role in averting a nuclear war; and
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov's actions were linked to a false missile warning which occurred due to a malfunction of a Soviet satellite during the height of the Cold War; and
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov told his commander that their early warning system was giving false information because ground radar could not detect any incoming missiles; and
WHEREAS, Only weeks earlier the Soviet Union had shot down a passenger airplane flying to South Korea from the United States, killing 269 people; and
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov's story was made public by his commander after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Stanislav Petrov received international awards but received no recognition in his own country; and
WHEREAS, The commitment, sacrifice and dedication of Stanislav Petrov serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Stanislav Petrov imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby commemorate Stanislav Petrov for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
