RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 85; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor was the former Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster in England; and
WHEREAS, Born in Reading, Berkshire, to Irish immigrant parents who emigrated from County Cork, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor was ordained in 1956; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor served as a Bishop for four decades before being named a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor served as Archbishop of Westminster and led the Catholic faithful in England and Wales from 2000 until his retirement in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor was known for his efforts to promote closer relations between Catholics and Anglicans; and
WHEREAS, The holiness, hard work and dedication of Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby commemorate Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
