RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE CREATION OF HONORARY PETER J. MARTINEZ WAY
WHEREAS, Peter J. Martinez was an outstanding Chicagoan who was killed in battle in Vietnam whose loyal service to our country deserves to be commemorated; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Ricardo Munoz, Alderman of the 22nd Ward, has apprised this august body of this man's accomplishments during his short life; and
WHEREAS, Peter J. Martinez was born on May 3, 1951, to Isabel and Gilbert Bonilla. He had three sisters: Felicia, Maria and Olga; and five brothers: Frederick, Edward, Santos, Jose and Charles; and
WHEREAS, Peter attended our Lady of Sorrows grammar school. He was a member of the General Wood Boys Club on 25th Street. Peter had a local dairy route and he worked at the coin laundry on West 26th Street and Hamlin Avenue; and
WHEREAS, He enlisted in the United States Army in June, 1969. In November, he was sent to Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, Peter was a passenger of a military vehicle in Vietnam on a combat mission when a booby trap detonated. He died on May 5, 1970 and was buried at Fort Sheridan; and
WHEREAS, After his scheduled one-year tour in Vietnam, Peter was planning to marry Joanne Schintgen of Orlando, Florida; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of Peter J. Martinez's contributions to the City of Chicago and his country, there will be established Peter J. Martinez Way on South Springfield Avenue from West 24th Street to West 26th Street; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby recognize the contributions of Peter J. Martinez by establishing Peter J. Martinez Way on South Springfield Avenue from West 24th Street to West 26th Street.
