RESOLUTION

 

 

 

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Silverman has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 79; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of the Lincoln Park community, Dr. Edwin Silverman was the loving husband for 53 years of the late Marjorie; and

WHEREAS, Edwin Silverman was the much-adored father of Maria and Alexei and the grandfather of one to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Raised in the South Shore neighborhood, Dr. Edwin Silverman attended Purdue University in Indiana and earned a doctorate in romantic literature from Northwestern University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Silverman led the Illinois Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Services for 38 years and during his tenure helped to resettle tens of thousands of refugees and connect them with vital social services; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Silverman's influence extended to national legislation and he played an instrumental role in the foundation of the 1980 Refugee Act; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Edwin Silverman chaired the Advisory Council on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs for the Chicago Commission on Human Relations from 2003 to 2011; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Edwin Silverman serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Edwin Silverman to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Edwin Silverman imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby commemorate Dr. Edwin Silverman for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Edwin Silverman.
