RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, In the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Maria, twenty-two members of the Chicago Fire Department departed Chicago from O'Hare International Airport on a 10-day volunteer support mission to Puerto Rico on October, 4, 2017; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this emergency effort by Aldermen Edward M. Burke, Roberto Maldonado and Ariel Reboyras; and

WHEREAS, The volunteer team landed in San Juan and brought with them equipment donated by the Chicago Fire Department, including defibrillators, stretchers, stair chairs, oxygen nebulizers, medical monitors, flashlights and other items to assist fire departments in Puerto Rico; and

WHEREAS, Led by District Chief Juan Hernandez and accompanied by Alderman Ariel Reboyras, the volunteer team included Commander Curtis Hudson, Commander Francisco Velez, Captain Carlos Delgado, Lieutenant Carlos Robles, Lieutenant Raul Deleon, Lieutenant Luis Cordero and firefighters David Claudio, Eric Claudio, Steven Collazo, Jason Flores, Carmelo Flores, Justin Galloza, Eric Izquierdo, Fernando Nieves, Jason Ortiz, Luis Quinones, Richard Rosado, Robert Simpson, Marilyn Vega, Louis Zamora and engineer Juan Sotomayor; and

WHEREAS, The volunteer members of the Chicago Fire Department are in Puerto Rico to assist local fire departments in the aftermath of the deadly hurricane that made landfall on, September 20 causing widespread devastation and destruction and leaving most of the island's residents without electricity or clean water; and

WHEREAS, The team also set up temporary communications systems and is assessing the possibility of conducting further support missions; and

WHEREAS, The volunteer team is scheduled to return to O'Hare International Airport on United Flight 841 on Saturday, October 14, 2017; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of October, 2017, do hereby proudly congratulate the members of the Chicago Fire Department who volunteered for this important support mission; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Jose Santiago.
